Town and Country Veterinary Service is a privately owned mixed veterinary practice in Somerset on Tasmania’s North West Coast. The practice has been part of the local community since 1995. The practice has continued to evolve through changes in ownership and the addition of an established ambulatory dairy service. Today, the practice is led by Dr Suzanne van Es and Dr Leah Hirst and continues to grow from its Somerset base.
One of the things that makes Town and Country Veterinary Service distinctive is the breadth of veterinary work undertaken by the team. The practice cares for companion animals alongside farm and large animal patients, combining a busy small animal clinic with an ambulatory service that supports farming clients throughout the surrounding region.
Cats and dogs make up most of the small animal patients, although the team also sees rabbits, guinea pigs and other pocket pets. Services range from preventative healthcare and consultations through to dentistry, diagnostics, emergency care and surgery. Surgical work includes routine procedures as well as more advanced soft tissue and orthopaedic cases, with access to a travelling surgeon or referral options when required.
Large animal work is an important part of the practice’s identity, with a particular interest in dairy cattle as well as other farm animals. The vets undertake farm visits and provide services including pregnancy diagnosis, herd and individual animal consultations, disease investigations, reproductive work and surgery.
For veterinary nurses, the day-to-day focus is within the small animal clinic, while still being part of a practice connected to the wider farming community. Nursing staff may also assist with areas such as booking large animal calls and dispensing medications, providing an interesting connection between the two sides of the practice.
