Kippax Veterinary Hospital has been caring for pets in Canberra since 1977. From its beginnings, the practice has grown into a large, purpose-built veterinary hospital in Holt, with a recently renovated environment designed to support a broad range of veterinary care.
At the centre of the hospital is a philosophy that shapes more than its approach to patients. “Care with Kindness” extends to clients and staff as well, supported by five core principles: Balance, Accountability, Respect, Commitment and Community.
Kippax is one of Canberra’s larger veterinary hospitals. On a typical day, around six to seven veterinarians work alongside 10 to 12 support staff, giving nurses the opportunity to be part of a substantial clinical team rather than working in isolation. The hospital includes experienced vets, qualified veterinary nurses, receptionists and support staff, with team members bringing a wide range of backgrounds and clinical interests. Several employees have also developed their careers within the practice, progressing from kennel hand, reception or study roles into qualified veterinary nursing positions.
For veterinary nurses who enjoy variety, Kippax offers exposure to a broad range of clinical work. The hospital provides general medical and preventative care alongside surgery, dentistry, diagnostic imaging, in-house laboratory services, emergency and urgent care during business hours, exotic pet care and more specialised services such as feline radioactive iodine treatment, endoscopy and rhinoscopy.
The hospital is ASAV Accredited, indicating the standards behind its facilities and veterinary care. It is also an ISFM-accredited Feline Friendly Clinic, with particular attention given to reducing stress for feline patients. Its purpose-built facilities include in-house diagnostics, radiology and ultrasound capabilities, while the current nursing team works with modern surgical, dental and anaesthetic monitoring equipment.
Nurses are regarded as an important part of the clinical team and are encouraged to use their skills, contribute ideas and continue developing professionally. The current team includes nurses with interests in areas such as emergency and medical nursing, as well as long-standing team members with more than a decade of veterinary nursing experience. Employees also have access to a confidential Employee Assistance Program, reflecting the practice’s focus on supporting the people providing the care.
