Challenger Vet Hospital is a family-owned, independent small animal hospital in Kwinana, in Perth’s southern suburbs. Established in 2015, the practice was created with a clear focus on providing high-quality, personalised veterinary care in a friendly environment. It remains privately owned and operated, giving the team the opportunity to make decisions locally and maintain the personal approach on which the hospital was founded.
The hospital is open seven days a week for consultations, surgery and hospital treatment, with a broad range of medical and surgical care provided in-house. Continuity of care, communication and compassionate handling are important parts of the practice’s approach, along with building lasting relationships with clients and their pets.
A hospital where nurses can use their skills
For veterinary nurses who enjoy being closely involved in patient care, Challenger offers considerable variety. The hospital manages everything from routine consultations and preventative healthcare through to emergency presentations, hospitalised patients, dentistry, complex soft tissue procedures and orthopaedic surgery. TPLO cruciate repair surgery is among the advanced procedures performed in-house, with visiting consultants also used for selected specialist services.
The purpose-built hospital includes two dedicated surgical theatres, separate dog and cat wards, treatment and dental areas, in-house laboratory facilities, digital radiography and ultrasound. Challenger’s current recruitment material also describes a recent expansion designed to improve workflow and the experience of staff, clients and patients.
This breadth of work gives nurses the chance to contribute across different areas of the hospital rather than being limited to one narrow part of the patient journey. Surgical nursing and inpatient care are particular interests of several members of the current nursing team, while others have developed skills in areas including anaesthesia, pain management, emergency care, animal behaviour and client relationships.
